Update: Derailed Amtrak that Killed 3 was Traveling at 80MPH in a 30MPH Zone

Recent news updates on the passenger train that derailed in Washington state state there were a total of 3 casualties caused by the incident early Monday morning. Dozens were also hospitalized due to injuries sustained from the crash.

New reports from an anonymous official claim that the train was traveling at 80 miles per hour in a zone labeled for 30. Investigators main focus for the time being, is the status of the engineer who was operating the Amtrak at the time the accident occurred. The official states that there was a second person in the engineering cab who was being trained in, and are questioning whether this would have distracted the engineer from realizing the speed, at which the train was traveling.

National Transportation Safety Board member Bella Dinh-Zarr says it’s too early to understand exactly what caused the derailment and why the train was moving at the speed it was. Components of the safety device known as “Positive Train Control”, which we covered in our story yesterday, were installed, but were not expected to be functional until spring of the coming year.
