32 year-old Cory Iverson, a fire apparatus engineer has died during a fight against one of the largest fires ever recorded in California. No details his death have been released at this time. He left behind a pregnant wife and 2 year-old daughter.
The Thomas Fire has scorched a total of 250,000 acres of land thus far, destroying more than 1,000 buildings, and damaging 250 others. Firefighters have been struggling against the blaze for 10 days now, and still it remains only 30% contained. So far, this fire alone has cost the state of California at least 75 million dollars.
Officials have predicted they can have what is now the 4th largest fire in state history fully contained by January 7th of the coming year.
The Chief of Cal Fire released a statement following the incident:
“I am very saddened to report that a firefighter fatality has occurred on the Thomas incident. The incident is still unfolding, but in this world of fast moving information, it is important to me that only factual information be shared. To that end, I can confirm a fatality of a Calfire engineer from the San Diego unit has occurred. IMT 4, CAL FIRE Local 2881 and Southern Region leadership are working to support the Unit and his family, who have been notified.”
